And day 15 of the [community profile] snowflake_challenge :)

In your own space, share a favorite memory about fandom: the first time you got into fandom, the last time a fanwork touched your heart, crazy times with fellow fans (whether on-line or off-line), a lovely comment you’ve received or have left for someone. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Lord of the Rings. Goodness me. It's been quite a number of years since I first really discovered the internet, and that slash fiction wasn't based on horror movies, and that yes, I can write fic if I feel like it.

I must admit, discovering slash all those years ago (2001 if memory serves) was a real eye opener lol I was curious and bored as I was waiting for school to start up again, so I googled this strange term that I'd read on a forum and was hooked from the get go!

It was everything I didn't imagine it to be and I loved it!

During that time I met some great friends online that I am still in contact with today, and have even met most of them in person. I consider them to be like family and it's so nice to revisit Middle Earth with The Hobbit now. It's been a long time since I've seen the fandom so active, and it really does make me smile.

It was my very first fandom. And will probably be with me forever ♥

Second last day of [community profile] snowflake_challenge!

In your own space, write a love letter to Fandom in general, to a particular fandom, to a trope, a relationship, a character, or to your flist/circle/followers. Share you love and squee as loud as you want to. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Dear Supernatural fandom,

I wish you weren't so crazy. Really. You're completely and utterly bonkers. Alas, I know it's not all tin hattery, there's some gems in there. It's just a matter of finding them.

I love you and hate you all at once, and feel obligated to keep watching the show even as it staggers into more and more ridiculous territory.

But you'll always have a place in my heart, being my first tv show fandom (that I can remember at least!) and I will forever enjoy writing and reading J2 because they will probably be my OTP forever ;)

As much as I side-eye the fandom a lot, I do really love it, and I can't imagine what it would be like without all the crazy. I find as we grow and the fandom gets older, sanity often prevails. It's nice to see the little changes, and I hope it remains a strong fandom for years to come.

Love, me.

Well this is an easy one for [community profile] snowflake_challenge!

In your own space, ask for recs. Something as simple as "I like XYZ (where XYZ is a kink, a pairing, a trope, etc) - please rec me some." Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

LotR slash, I lost a bunch of bookmarks recently and would love any recs. RPF or character fic (what is that called...just fic?) this is the one fandom that I am not fussy about lol

Also The Hobbit fanfic. I've not been able to find much? Then again, I haven't looked on AO3 because I didn't think of it until right this second...

The Avengers - Hawkeye/anyone but Coulson. I've read a few fics that don't involve the Coulson pairing and would like some more, they seem few and far between :(

Art, fanfic, podfic, videos. I'll take anything :D

Day 12 of [community profile] snowflake_challenge.

In your own space, rec at least three fanworks that you think would make a good intro into XYZ fandom. Rec a fandom overview, a introductory picspam, stories that define and shape the fandom. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

If at all possible, try to pick a smaller or rarer fandom, one that maybe doesn't have the following you feel it should.

Okay, I'm going with Football (soccer) RPS here. I read a few pairings, and I particularly love rare pairs. Here's a few that I have bookmarked, so I imagine they would be a good introduction ;) I have recced one of them in a previous post, but I figure it's worth mentioning it again!

1. The District, Outtake 1: The Au Pair by [livejournal.com profile] dorkorific (this is the one I've recced before...)
Pairing: Xabi Alonso/Mats Hummels
Rating: NC-17
Summary: Political AU; Xabi meets the guy taking care of Stevie's kids.

2. The Flames of This Quick Love by [livejournal.com profile] yaoiwhore9
Pairing: Esteban Granero/Xabi Alonso
Rating: R/NC-17
Summary: AU Esteban Granero is a midfielder for the Tercera División team, Puerta Bonita. Due to fortuitous circumstances, they are drawn against Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey, where Esteban meets Xabi Alonso who immediately takes a liking to him.

3. Los que son puros y de verdad by [livejournal.com profile] lenakpl (the fic is in English, it just has a Spanish title). Pairing: Sergio Ramos/Fernando Torres
Rating: PG
Summary: Sergio's reaction to Fernando not being called up for Spain in the game against Venezuela.

4. I'm just going to rec the comm where I found the above [livejournal.com profile] footballslash :)
wattle_neurotic: (The Hobbit - Thorin blue)
Like it says on the tin, day 11 of [community profile] snowflake_challenge

In your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon (a TV episode, a song, a favourite interview, a book) and explain why you love it so much. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman is my favourite book on the planet.

I remember when I first picked it up, I was wanting to try some Neil Gaiman novels, but I didn't want to start with anything too heavy. The premise seemed promising, so I bought it. And then devoured it not soon after. It's just such a good, funny book.

Looking at humanity through the eyes of a demon (Crowley) and an angel (Aziraphale) is quite interesting, especially because Crowkey isn't really all that bad; he thinks humans do more devilry than he ever could (and he's probably right). And I just love Aziraphale and his books and snark, it's all really just a lot of fun!

Since then I've read most of Gaiman's novels, though I've not really been able to get into Pratchett's work (I'm not sure why, it's something that confuses me). But I always return to read Good Omens, and I have a feeling I'll be re-reading it for many years to come.
wattle_neurotic: (Grimm - Nick awkward)
I've not done day 9 of [community profile] snowflake_challenge at this point. I'm not sure if I will or not, we'll see. I've never been able to create something because I've been told to, y'know? But maybe inspiration will hit!

But the other days, I can do! So here is my day 10...

In your own space, talk about a creator. Show us why you think they are amazing. It can be a detailed, thoughtful analysis, or a squeeful, joyful post. Or maybe a combination of the two. Make a recs list, link to their archives or master lists or websites, maybe create a Fanlore page for them. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I'm going to talk about [livejournal.com profile] _mournthewicked - there was a time when pretty much ALL I did was read this very talented lady's Reinventing Love 'verse. And then I re-read it, and honestly, looking at it now makes me want to read it all over again!

Just...if you like Supernatural RPF, and in particular Jared/Jensen, just go read it. ALL of it. GO GO GO!

Also here is a link to her masterpost of all the fanfic, also worth a look :) A vast majority of it is Supernatural related.
wattle_neurotic: (Chuck - don't freak out)
[community profile] snowflake_challenge time again, woo! I'm home early today with a sinus headache...the air conditioning at work really screws me up sometimes :( much better than I was when I left though. So that's good!

In your own space, talk about setting yourself a fannish goal. Big or small, it doesn't matter. Some examples: complete a bingo, sign up for a Big Bang, write that fic you've been thinking about for years, podfic that story that you love, make a fanmix for your fandom, post that bit of meta or reclist you keep putting off. Maybe resolve to be better at leaving feedback or answering comments. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I want to sign up for SPN/J2 Big Bang again and complete it this year. I have done it once, but I would like to do it again; especially since the plot in my head has been there for the past two years and the start I have is, imo, not too shabby.

I'd also like to finish NaNoWriMo but that probably won't be fandom related...I think. I've failed three years in a row (I start okay, and it's all downhill from there!) this year, I intend to start planning in May. Hah we'll see how that goes.
wattle_neurotic: (The Hobbit - Bilbo and Andy Serkis)
Today's [community profile] snowflake_challenge is a bit difficult...

In your own space, share something non-fannish about yourself. A passion or a hobby or a talent, something that people might not know about you. We are more than just our fandoms. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I read a lot. I think I would go insane without books and my kindle. Audiobooks aren't really my thing but if I go blind before I go deaf (I think my ears will be the first to go, considering how I can't hear properly *now* lol) I would listen to them :) My Grandpa does, he really enjoys them, and they keep his mind active. I hope I'm as sharp as he is, if I get to 90!

And that, is what we call a tangent (I'm good at going off on those too).

I also bake. I'm pretty good at the baking thing, even though I can't cook proper food. But who needs proper food when there is cake? And cookies? And slices? And my granola which I insist on making myself because store bought stuff is gross and not tasty. Also bread. I love to bake bread, and I make a pretty awesome pizza base too *g*

However, I would like to be good at crochet (I'm trying to teach myself, I think the break I've taken from it has been a year long so far, I'm getting there). I'd also like to be good at sewing. Again, because unlike baking, results aren't immediate, I get disheartened and give up. I'll get there eventually. I have a lot of yarn and felt to turn into things.

I would like to live in a self sufficient house one day. Veggie garden, solar power, solar heating, that sort of thing. Only problem is I'm really horribly bad at gardening, and I'm not sure I could live without my extensive dvd collection. So maybe...mostly self sufficient lol
wattle_neurotic: (The Hobbit - Bofur axe)
Day 3 and day 5 didn't require entries on my part, which is why it seems like I'm skipping days, but I have done them :D

Now on to day 6 of [community profile] snowflake_challenge!

In your own space, pimp three comms or challenges and explain why you love them. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

1. [livejournal.com profile] spn_j2_bigbang (there is no mirror on DW) my very first big bang, though not in my first fandom. I look forward to this challenge every year, though I have only completed it once. SPN itself may be a bit iffy in quality, but fandom always pulls off a great big bang challenge, and there are always some wonderful fics to come out of it. Their site looks a bit weird at the moment, I assume as the account has been downgraded so the layout went loopy.

2. [livejournal.com profile] bakebakebake (there is no mirror on DW) I know. This is a fandom challenge, but to me, baking may as well be a fandom. I read about it as much as I read fanfic! I love to bake, and this community is where I get a lot of my recipes from (particularly when I was stuck with that gluten free diet for a while). There's lots of great recipes for any taste, mostly of the baked goods variety (there are some proper meals, but those are few and far between).

3. [livejournal.com profile] eames_arthur and [community profile] arthur_eames on DW. I know Inception isn't exactly a new movie, and though the fandom has died down considerably over the past year or so, there are still some great fics being produced, and a bunch of older fics that are just as good as they were the first time around. This is the pairing I read when I can't think of anything else to do, or I'm bored with other fandoms in general. I think I'll always return to Inception, and in particular Arthur and Eames fic. There's just something special about that pairing.

4. [livejournal.com profile] crack_van (there is no mirror on DW). Okay. Since I ignored the rules and pimped a baking community, have another fandom one. Crack Van is awesome. Don't know what to read? Go here. There's many, many fandoms to choose from, and all of the fics recced are awesome. If you're just starting out in a fandom it is useful too, to find some great fic to get you going.
wattle_neurotic: (Dr Horrible - bad horse)
In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your wish-list if you feel comfortable doing so. Maybe someone will grant a wish. Check out other people's posts. Maybe you will grant a wish. If any wishes are granted, we'd love it if you link them to this post.

1. The Hobbit icons, I am mainly taken with Thorin and Kili (duh) also Bilbo and Bofur (it's the hat!) I will probably get around to making some eventually. Maybe. Heh.

2. True Blood fic, Eric/Jason. I don't even know why. It works in my head.

3. Avengers fan art, Steve/Clint, or Thor/Clint, or anything but Clint/Coulson (I still do not get that pairing) :/
wattle_neurotic: (SH - reality substitute)
I won't be doing day 1, since I haven't written or done anything for a million years, but here are some recs for day 2.

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you did not create. Drop a link to your post in the comments. See if you can rec fanworks that are less likely to be praised: tiny fandoms, rare pairings, fanworks other than stories, lesser known kinks or tropes. Find fanworks that have few to no comments, or creators new to a particular fandom and maybe aren't well known or appreciated. Appreciate them.

Now. I know these three things don't really belong to small fandoms, but they aren't exactly recent - and they were the first things that came to mind, so here they are :)

Fic: Jon's Bookstore (A Few of My Favorite Things) by [livejournal.com profile] foxxcub
Bandom, Jon/Spencer, Frank/Gerard, Ryan/Brendon, Pete/Patrick | 11,300 words | R
A funeral is really the wrong place to learn you've inherited a business.

Fic: The District, Outtake 1: The Au Pair by [livejournal.com profile] dorkorific
Football (rare pair), Xabi Alonso/Mats Hummels, Steven Gerrard, it's not rated but I'd go with NC17
Political AU; Xabi meets the guy taking care of Stevie's kids.

Art: A walk in the park by [livejournal.com profile] loobeeinthesky
X Men - First Class, Charles/Erik, G
...another road trip picture of the guys, i'm a bit fond of wondering what they did when looking for fellow mutants.
